It was a disappointing weekend for the Sacred Heart softball team as they lost three out of four conference games over the course of two days.
The Pioneers dropped both games of a double-header to Long Island University on Saturday then salvaged a split with Wagner College on Sunday.
"It was a tough weekend," said co-head coach Pam London. "Emotionally, it was draining. We played so well in some areas and just not good enough in others."
Sacred Heart's two losses to Long Island on Saturday were both close games that could have gone either way, as they lost 8-6 in game one and 1-0 in game two.
"In the LIU double-header, you can understand why they say softball and baseball are games of inches," said London. "A couple of inches either way on several balls and we are on the winning end of both games."
In game one versus Long Island, Sacred Heart's offense plated a solid six runs on nine hits. Their defense, on the other hand, couldn't contain Long Island's bats, as the Blackbirds out-scored the Pioneers on eight runs and eight hits.
"We didn't play bad, we just couldn't capitalize at the key moments or play both our defensive and offensive 'A' games at the same time," said freshman centerfielder Taylor Froelich.
Game two was a different story as the Pioneer defense was flawless - allowing only one run and six hits - but their offense just couldn't seem to get it done and were ultimately shut out.
"When we see LIU in the NEC tournament, we will pull it together and bring our best from both games," said Froelich.
On Sunday afternoon, Sacred Heart faced another conference opponent in Wagner College. The Pioneers began right where they left off on Saturday, getting shut out 3-0 in game one of the double-header.
"On Sunday versus Wagner, we got off to a slow start again, letting scoring opportunities slip away," said London. "Megan [Spehar] pitched well enough to win had we given her some offensive support."
