It is that time of year again for all you aspiring MC's.
"Freestyle Night 7" is coming back to campus on Wednesday, April 16th at 10:10pm in the Outpost.
The event will be coordinated and hosted by senior Rich "PR1MO" Deecken, with DJ Mo Niklz spinning at the event.
The event is open to all with a $5 admission for non-Sacred Heart students.
It will begin with an open rap battle and dance-off featuring talent from the Bridgeport community where they will compete for the Fairfield County Freestyle Championship.
There will also appearances by the Mystery Dance Crew, live slam poetry by Outtakes employee Gil Figueroa, and last years champ, Hugo "Juice" Villacres.
With each year comes more entertainment, stronger competition and more organization.
"I went to one freshman year and there was not a big turnout so I have not been to one since but I might stop by this year to see how it goes. I thought that it was good but it took a while for them to get set up and they needed a wider variety of beats," said junior Diana Pellegrino.
This year's entertainment will be bigger and more entertaining than those of the past.
Plan to get to the event early because it tends to accumulate a big crowd every year.
"On several occasions, we maxed out the capacity of the Outpost to the fire marshal's limit. We expect another sellout crowd of 200 or more this year," said Deecken.
The majority of students are very excited about this year's battle.
"I have only been there once but I was impressed with the number of people in attendance and the people rapping took it very seriously. I feel like we don't have enough support for people who like to rap- it is a good show every time and a lot of people come out to see it," said junior Lilah Rossi
This will be the 7th year the freestyle club will be hosting freestyle battles.
The event is planned, promoted, set up and hosted by Deecken, along with the club treasurer Theresa Larkin.
The competition is opened to all who think they have what it takes to battle. It is a good time for those aspiring rappers with less experience to get some experience and see how they compare to others.
"I believe that the event is fun and gives MC's a great opportunity to show others what their rap level has to offer," said Villacres.
The event appears to get bigger and more competitive every year.
According to Villacres, "last years competition had pretty good stage presence-being less stage experienced, I had to rely more on lyrical content.
When asked about his presence in this year's competition he simply responded with "Let's just say, look out for me."
" I think it looks really interesting so I will probably be going, but there is no way I am participating in the actual battle," said Ben Wicki.
This year's competition promises to be the best yet. Students are very excited to attend.
