The Sacred Heart women's softball team nabbed three wins in four games this past weekend.
The Pioneers swept Mount St. Mary's on Saturday, and split with Monmouth University in Sunday's double-header, giving them a 3-1 record in the Northeast Conference standings.
"It was good opening to our NEC league play. We were also coming off a nine game losing streak, so three out of four has brought our confidence back," said co-head coach Pam London.
Sacred Heart had control the entire time, in both games on Saturday verses Mount St. Mary's. The first game the Pioneers defeated the Mount 7-4, and posted a run in five out seven innings.
"We went into Saturday's games knowing we had a job to do and we accomplished that job. We swung at strikes, we hit the ball, and we scored runs," said senior Tianna Bishko.
In game two of Saturday's double-header Sacred Heart sent freshman Jen Russell to the mound, and Russell was lights out, pitching a complete game shutout, with 10 strikeouts. Russell was backed by her offense, as the Pioneer's scored two runs, winning game two by a score of 2-0.
A sweep on Saturday was a confidence booster that Sacred Heart's softball team really needed.
"Coming into the game, our record wasn't exactly what you would call winning. Winning these games was crucial and a huge confidence booster, and was a huge weight lifted off our shoulders," said freshman Taylor Froelich.
With their confidence high, the Pioneer softball team had some wind knocked out of their sails, as they fell 4-0, in the opener of Sunday's double-header against Monmouth University.
Sacred Heart could not seem to get their bats going to drive in their runners, on their first game on Sunday.
"We need to work on hitting with runners in scoring position," said co-head coach Elizabeth Luckie.
It didn't look so good for Sacred Heart at the start of game two of Sunday's game, as Monmouth's catcher Jessica Nicola tripled to right field, scoring Nicole Alvarez, in the top of the first inning.
