Sacred Heart men's volleyball gave a valiant effort but came up short with a loss Harvard 3-1 on Friday and 3-0 loss to Stevens Technology at the William H. Pitt Center.
"We really felt that we could have beat both Harvard and Stevens Tech, however we didn't have enough gas in the tank to complete our goals," said senior Pete Donahue.
Junior BJ Smith led the Pioneers with 14 kills followed by senior Chris Yantz with seven kills. Sophomore Kalani Efstathiou contributed to the Pioneers battle with eight winners.
Pioneer coach CJ Emanuelson attempted a new line-up hoping to find a new advantage to take down both Harvard and Stevens Tech.
"We have no problems playing with each other no matter what line up is thrown out by coach. We know that everyone on the court is going to work their hardest to win and we have confidence with each others ability," Donohue said.
On Friday, Sacred Heart Jumped out to a one game lead, but Harvard stormed back to take the next three games.
"We tried new lineups and I enjoyed the switch to the outside. It felt like I got a lot more swings," said Smith.
The Pioneers came out with a powerful start, with a 17-13 lead in the first game.
Pioneers won seven of the next 10 points to open up a 24-18 edge. Sacred Heart went on to a 30-26 win in the opening game. Smith had five kills while Efsthatiou added four winners to give the Pioneers a head start.
"Our passing was there in the first game and that's why we won. After that, it started to go down hill," Smith said.
The Harvard Crimson came out strong with senior Jamie Crooks and junior Brady Weissbound each having 14 kills.
The second and third game, the Crimson challenged the Pioneers back, winning both games gaining a one-match advantage. Klud added five kills in the third game for Harvard.
The fourth game was a close contest early but Harvard was able to break out and open up a 17-11 lead, which the Pioneers could not recover from. S
Sacred Heart was unable to lift their spirits in Saturday's game with a 3-0 loss versus Stevens Technology.
The Pioneers kept the competition close but the Stevens Ducks were able to waddle away with the scores of 30-22, 30-21 and 32-30 in all three games.
