It was taught in the movie "Dodgeball" to "learn the five d's of of the game: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge."
Hopefully the Sacred Heart students participating in the dodge ball tournament have taken these words of wisdom to heart as they prepare for the April event.
"If you're into sports, or just like watching your friends get wild on the court, the dodge ball tournament is a great place for you to stop by," said sophomore class secretary, Alexandra Vicchio.
In addition to the thrill of competing, Vicchio adds that prizes will also be given out to the first and second place teams as well as the team with the best costume.
The idea for the tournament came from the class of 2010 senate member Ted Fifield who is a big fan of the sport.
"Personally, I'm excited for this tournament. I love dodge ball and I'm glad our board decided to hold this tournament. It's going to be a fun competition with a great atmosphere surrounding it," said Fifield.
The students who planned the event came up with the rules of the game, which are mainly based on the rules from "Dodgeball".
"We thought it would be a good way to raise money for the class, yet have fun at the same time," said class of 2010 president, Katie Higgins.
Students form teams of six to compete for the first place prize of a $120 gift certificate to Uno's Pizzeria, in addition to $50 gift certificates for the second place spot and best team costume.
Sign up started last week and is going on until the day of the actual event where students can sign up at the Pitt where the tournament is being held.
"We have a bunch of teams signed up to play right now, and we're hoping to draw even more teams before the tournament begins, so students should expect some exciting competition," said Fifield.
With the event rapidly approaching, teams are preparing their costumes and practicing their dodge ball skills with the hopes of winning.
"We're all really excited for the tournament; we actually play dodge ball all year as our warm up for wrestling practice," said sophomore Ricky Eichenlaub.
Although Eichenlaub's team hasn't yet decided on a costume, there is no doubt in their minds that they will leave the tournament victorious.
The class of 2010 that is running this event is just as excited as the competitors and hopes to make this the first of many dodge ball tournaments.
"It's something that we hope to make a tradition with the class of 2010 and pass the event down to a class when we graduate," said Higgins.
