their 19-win season come to an end on Saturday when they fell to the Monmouth Hawks 75-70 in the quarterfinals of the Northeast Conference Tournament.

"We were given a preseason rank of fourth place simply out of respect for the people who graduated and when we started off 0-3, everyone had doubts in us," said junior Kaitlin Sowinski.

Despite suffering the disappointing loss, several players earned individual honors for the year. Sowinski received First Team All-Conference and Junior Stephanie Ryan earned Second Team All-Conference.

Sowinski became the 13th player in Pioneer history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark for her career, coming into the night needing just two points to accomplish the feat.

Apo has had an exciting first season and was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Year. She has earned a spot on the league's all-rookie team and started 21 out of 29 games. She averaged 12 points per game and finished the season shooting 42.9 percent from behind the three-point arc.

"The NEC honors I received are nice, but I'm not at all satisfied. Winning a championship would be better," Apo said.

Coach Ed Swanson was named the NEC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career. His first NEC Coaching Award came after leading the Pioneers to a 20-7 record in the 2003-04 season. It was also the year he picked up his 200th career victory.

The Hawks' offense swooped in to give them a 13-point lead with 14:32 remaining in the first half.

The Hawks were paced by junior Jennifer Bender's 10 first half points while senior Veronica Randolph finished the game with eight points.

The Hawks secured a 41-27 lead at the end of the first half.

The Pioneers ended their drought by scoring 20 points in the first seven minutes of the second.

The combination of Apo and Sowinski seemed to be working as the Pioneers cut the Hawks' lead to 52-48.

With 7:47 left in the second half, a 3-pointer made by freshman Maggie Cosgrove pulled the Pioneers ahead, 58-55.

Monmouth battled back to take a 61-60 lead after two Bender free throws at the 5:21 mark in the second half.

"Monmouth came right at us and we were unable to reciprocate," said Sowinski.

Sacred Heart was out-rebounded by Monmouth, 40-38 and its bench was out-scored by a large margin-- 25-7.

It was also only 13-of-24 from the free throw line.

The team returns next season with all their players except senior Lisa Moray.

"For now, our season is over but you can believe that we will come back better, hungrier, more experienced, and more determined next year," Sowinski said.
