You listen to their music, buy their CDs, go to their concerts, and hear them on the radio; but did you ever ask yourself how all of it gets done?
All the specifics of the music industry are discussed in Intro to Music Business, a course at Sacred Heart taught by Professor Galen Tate. This course provides insight for students, enabling them to learn what goes on with musical artists in a business sense.
"Our course explores record labels, live performances, songwriting, publishing, copyright, licensing, marketing and promotion. The roles of various music industry professionals are examined," said Tate.
The highlight of the class is the Live Music Project, an event where the students are in charge of putting on a live concert which includes booking the artist, contracts, venues and behind the scenes work.
"Through our Live Music Project, all aspects of the music industry are examined and utilized ... all class members participate in every aspect of the music business," said Tate.
The pressure is on for the students during this time where they combine forces and make use of all the information they learned from the semester.
"Live Music Project was definitely the stand out event in the class. In it, we were given the task of putting together a live concert. We were given a crash course in all of the behind the scenes work required to have a live concert run smoothly," said sophomore Steven Jimenez.
"We broke up into small groups and learned our assignments. The contracts came in, the posters went up… there was a venue, a band, an audience, and sound, so it was a success," said senior Anne Tranquilli-Bausher.
The class explores the many different facets of the music industry, from how an artist is booked for a concert to how bands and labels make their money.
".[It's] a way to learn the language of the industry. Once you know the language it will help you to understand the concepts and move up in the business," said Jimenez.
