Saturday night, the Pitt center hosted a wrestling showdown between the Sacred Heart Pioneers and the Rider University Broncos. The final score of 31-4 did not detail how intense the night actually was. Every match was close, some even going into overtime.

"Tonight's meet showed progress. Rider is a tough and experienced team. They're tough top to bottom. They always put up a good dog-fight," said coach Casey Brewster. "We really stuck with them tonight, even if the score didn't show that."

Sacred Heart came out ready to fight and eager to win, while Rider arrived prepared to shut the Pioneers down. Coming into the match, the Broncos had the advantage with a 5-7 record compared with the Pioneer record of 2-11.

"It really helps us grow when we wrestle against the better teams in the conference," said Brewster.

"We got off to a late start this season. We're building on it this year," said junior Bill Beirmeister.

Sacred Heart's only victor of the night came in the form of a 184-pound freshman Ricky Eichenlaub. With a final score of 11-3, Eichenlaub conquered Rider's freshman Joe Ferber, putting four-points on the board for the Pioneers.

"We always expect a lot from Rider. They are a tough team with good coaches. Some of their wrestlers were even All-American last year," said Eichenlaub.

On the mat was Beirmeister in the heavyweight-class. The opening match was intense with a double-overtime cliff-hanger. Escape after escape by each opponent made the match exciting, but eventually resulted in a loss for Sacred Heart due to riding time. By default, junior Ed Bordas of Rider took the victory and the first three-points.

Freshman Ed Galvin took on freshman Ilyass Elmsaouri in the 125-pound weight class. His single point for an escape was not enough to defeat Elmasouri's two-point takedown. Rider accrued three more points.

In the 133-pound weight-class, Pioneer sophomore Pat Feeley put up a good fight pushing his match into overtime. Unfortunately he lost to sophomore Tommy Lorenzo, giving Rider the points.
