The lights are hot as they beat down on the wrestling ring. The crowd cheers as their favorite baseball team walks onto the field. The cheerleaders scream as the foul shot goes into the net. These are the everyday experiences of those who go into sports management careers.

This February the John F. Welch College of Business at Sacred Heart University proclaimed the development of its new sport and entertainment marketing consortium. The consortium is a group of executives from the sports and entertainment field that will work together with the university's program in order to benefit the education and experiences of the students in the department.

The executive participants in the consortium will bring opportunities to campus such as speakers, lectures, as well as internship and job opportunities for students. Last fall Geof Rochester, the executive vice president of sponsorship and talent brands of WWE held a lecture on campus.

"This has been a great way for Sacred Heart to build new relationships in the corporate worl and to strengthen our existing relationships," said Dr. Joshua Shuart, Assistant Professor of Sport Management.

"Our mission is for the consortium to be something that's beneficial to the corporate members as well as to the university and its students," said Shuart.

Shuart is the co-director and co-founder of the consortium. His colleague Dr. Peter Maresco is a clinical Assistant Professor of Marketing and also a co-director and founder. The two have worked together in order to make the consortium a reality.

The opportunities brought about by this consortium can help students make their way into the corporate world by introducing them to corporate executives and new company names.

"It is a great opportunity for students to get experience and to form ties with large named companies," said sophomore Carolyn Brudner.

Students outside of the department can also benefit from the lectures and on campus opportunities. Some see it as a great program that should be in other departments of the university as well.
