Martha Stewart, the self-started media mogul, has just expanded her Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Company.
Stewart has recently bought the rights to chef Emeril Lagasse's franchise.
Back in 2004, she was convicted of obstructing justice and lying to the police about a well-timed stock sale, but after being incarcerated and on house arrest she put it behind her, went back to work and continued to expand her company.
Stewart has taken the domestic market and tuned it into a multi-billion dollar industry. Now that she has taken over Lagasse's franchise, it's possible that Stewart will take Lagasse's franchise and turn it into the next big thing.
Stewart already has her own television show called "The Martha Stewart Show," where she teaches domestic arts, similar to how a cooking show would work. She also has various lines of domestic products in stores like K Mart and Macy's.
The purchase of Lagasse's franchise includes his television shows, kitchen products, and cookbooks, all for $50 million, $45 million in cash and $5 million in stocks. However, it doesn't include Lagasse's 11 restaurants and corporate office.
Lagasse is a classic favorite on the Food Network channel. This sell shows potential for growth and profit.
Lagasse is the energetic chef who created the famous loud cooking phrase "Bam!" He is also a host on shows like "Emeril Live" and "Essence of Emeril." Though production has stopped on "Emeril Live," new shows will still continue to air in 2008.
"We are happy to see that these two great brands will be combining forces and wish both of them the best. All of Emeril's shows will remain on the network, and we also look forward to working with him on future projects," said the Food Network in a press release.
It seems that this affects the older generation more, like our parents, who take a more active part in domestic activities. Martha Stewart has a homemaker appeal that reaches out to our mothers and older women. They seem to be affected most because they are the ones who take more of an interest in the Martha Stewart empire.
"My mom really likes her show," said sophomore Madeline Meagher.
While students don't seem to be interested in the Stewart's empire, they do, however, enjoy the Food Network channel and many tune in frequently.
"My parents watch it a lot at home, so I end up watching a lot of it too. It actually helped my mom's cooking," said sophomore Amanda T. Schlichte.
"I wish they had the Food Network here on campus. I could sit at home for hours watching the Food Network channel," said sophomore Nicole Moutinho.
"I love all the shows."
