The Sacred Heart Pioneers men's wrestling team picked up their first victory of the season on Saturday defeating the Princeton Tigers, 36-12.

The Pioneers, however, came up short against the host team, the Harvard Pride, losing 37-9. Despite the loss to Harvard, Sacred Heart freshman Ricky Eichenlaub pulled out a win at 184-pound weight class.

The Pioneers also received a strong effort from junior heavyweight Bill Beirmeister as he battled the Pride's heavyweight Andrew Knapp to a

2-2. Knapp was awarded the victory on riding time.

Sacred Heart got off to a rocky start this season under first year head coach Casey Brewster. The Pioneers lost a few heartbreakers and were forced to forfeit a couple of matches throughout the season due to injuries.

The Pioneers were winless until Saturday's meet but their positive attitude against the Princeton Tigers helped them emerge victorious.

"Our match against Princeton was our match. We were the better team and they should not come close to beating us," said freshman Ricky Eichenlaub.

Sacred Heart showed that they were the better team as sophomore Pat Feely picked up a 15-6 win at the 133 pound weight class in Saturday's opening match.

The Pioneers continued to display confidence as freshman Brandon Lapp battled to a tight 3-1 decision at 197-pound weight class.

Despite the Pioneers' rough start, Saturday's tri-meet in Cambridge showed that they have some promising young talent.

"This year's team is very young with a lot of potential for the future," said Eichenlaub.

On Saturday, the Princeton Tigers witnessed first hand the strength of the Pioneers' young talent as they forfeited five weight classes giving Sacred Heart an easy first victory and a boost in confidence.

Our first win was great for the team. We have been coming up short in previous matches but we finally got one. Our confidence is always high going into matches and this win will help it for the upcoming matches," said freshman Brendon Lapp.
