The Sacred Heart men's ice hockey team dominated the University of Connecticut in their two-game weekend series, earning 6-4 and 4-0 victories over the Huskies.
"Friday night we played well and the level of play continued into Saturday," said senior Alexandre Parent. "It really feels good to beat UConn, as we have somewhat of a rivalry relationship."
The weekend series began Friday night as the Pioneers traveled to Storrs, Conn. to take on the Huskies. Sacred Heart found themselves down 4-3 in the final period but with just five minutes left, the Pioneers scored three goals which sealed the 6-4 win.
The momentum from the victory carried over to Saturday night's home game as Sacred Heart won in a shutout by junior goalie Stefan Drew. The 4-0 victory sealed the Pioneers' season with a winning record and season sweep against the Huskies.
"Friday night, our execution was not great, but our competitive edge and determination were right on," said coach Shaun Hannah. "Saturday night, we were definitely there competitively and exceedingly determined. The difference was that our execution was very good the second night."
Friday night's game, held at the Freitas Ice Forum, played out like an underdog story. Although Sacred Heart came into the game ranked fourth in the conference compared to Connecticut's eighth-place rank, the game portrayed the Pioneers as the underdogs.
"This was a big weekend for us. The past two weekends we've had some bad bounces, but things came together this weekend," said Parent.
The game began with a goal by the Huskies, only to be matched in the last two minutes of the first period by sophomore Eric Boisvert. Connecticut pushed ahead in the second period with two more goals making the score 3-1. The latter half of the second period belonged to junior Bear Trapp. He scored two goals off assists from Parent and sophomore Nick Johnson to tie the game.
The third and final period proved to be Sacred Heart's make-or-break moment. It began with the score tied 3-3. Just over five minutes into the period, Connecticut broke away to take a 4-3.
