The Sacred Heart men's track and field team captured its first ever NEC title last weekend with a score of 138 points to dethrone three-time champion Monmouth University.

The men's team was led by an over-the-top performance from senior Arman Dixon. Already a two-time meet MVP, Dixon won his second consecutive long jump title beating out Long Island's Corryl Boyd. His winning mark of 7.50m beat a fourteen-year-old meet record of 7.36m set by Monmouth's Maurice Bell in 1993.

Not only did Dixon perform well in the long jump, but he also clocked in with the top 200-meter preliminary time at 21.77. Alongside Dixon, was his senior teammate Scott Giordano who qualified to advance into Sunday.

"I had a good meet, but it means nothing without the team behind me," said Giordano. "Everything fell into place this weekend. Some things went wrong, but we still came out victorious."

On the women's end, the Pioneers sat in second place after day one, trailing Saint Francis by seven and a half points.

"Individually, I have been progressively improving and performing well at our meets," said senior Marsha Locke. "Each meet I can always do better and work on those little areas that will enhance my performance."

Locke just missed winning the shot by six centimeters during Saturday's competitions.

"We always compete with a mindset that is focused and driven," said senior Lenahndem Tankeng. "Expectations for this past NEC indoor championship were more than met. To say that any one person performed better than the next this past weekend would be under valuing the team. We are all knowledgeable of what we are capable of individually and this weekend's performances have proven that."

With the men in third place and the women sitting in second place, Sunday's final day of competition required the very best from the Pioneers.

Coming off his exceptional performance from the previous day, Dixon again came through for the Pioneers with a victory in the 60-meter dash, the 400 meters. He also placed second in the 200 meters behind Giordano, third place in the triple jump, and eighth place as part of the 4x400 meter relay team.

Giordano also placed third in the 60m dash and in the 400m.

Aside from its tandem of senior sprinters, the several other member of the men's team turned out other key performances.

Junior Luis German placed fourth in both the mile and 1600m, while classmates John Kenworthy and David Jones placed fourth and fifth in the 5000m. Kenworthy also placed third for the Pioneer's in the 3000m.
