Sophomore Chauncey Hardy got the scoring started with precision shooting, as the Pioneers defeated the Monmouth University Hawks 74-62 last Thursday at the William H. Pitt Center.

Hardy was the leading scorer for the Pioneers with 18 points. He was 4-7 from beyond the arc.

"Down the stretch the games are becoming more important and I'm just doing my best to win games," said Hardy.

The victory was the eighth consecutive and also clinched a playoff sport for the Pioneers. The win pushed their record to 14-10 overall, and 11-2 in the NEC, good enough for first place.

Sacred Heart dominated the first half. A three pointer by senior Luke Granato gave the Pioneer's a 32-13 lead with 5:29 remaining.

The Pioneers shot 45.5% from the field and were perfect from the free throw line in an efficient first half.

During the first half the Pioneers out rebounded Monumouth 21-14, something that the Pioneers have struggled to do all season.

"In all my years of coaching I have never seen a coach take a player out of a game because he is rebounding too much. The more the team rebounds, the better chance it has to win, if we want to enhance our chances of winning we will battle for every rebound," said head coach Dave Bike.

Senior forward Brice Brooks led the Pioneers with 10 rebounds in 27 minutes.

The Pioneers went into the locker room at half time with a comfortable 40-24 lead.

The second half started with a 14-4 run by the Hawks that cut the Sacred Heart lead to 44-38.

The story of the second half was Monmouth guard Yaniv Simpson. Simpson was red hot in the second half, making six three pointers to bring MU with in striking distance.

The Hawks would get as close as 57-52 before Simpson missed a pivotal three pointer, allowing Sacred Heart to regain control.

The Pioneers demonstrated poise and confidence during Monmouth's run. Their hard work and dedication was evident by their performance.
