Krissy's Corner: Valentine's Day: love it or leave it

Issue date: 2/14/08 Section: Perspectives
Valentine's Day isn't supposed to be a form of dreaded torture, but unfortunately, that is what the holiday has become for couples and singles alike. Regardless of whether or not you have someone special to spend this day with, it can be a painful one.
Now before you write me off as a heartless cynic or some hater of all things romantic. Hear me out. I have long disliked this tedious pastime, and I think you'll soon understand why. You might even begin to agree with me.
Now, it's pretty obvious why Valentine's Day isn't a favorite among the unattached. They are forced to walk around the entire day watching other girls picking up their roses in the mailroom, eating their Godiva and getting taken out to fancy dinners by their sweethearts.
Generally speaking, most single girls spend the majority of Valentine's Day waiting for it to finally be over so that they can resume their normal lives where being single isn't quite so depressing. Either that or they find some other way to make this day a happy one, even if they don't have a Valentine to call their own. Believe me, I've been there.
Some girls choose to elude the sadness that accompanies being alone on Valentine's Day by making fun of the custom and all it's silliness. I've even heard the phrase 'Happy Single's Awareness Day' dubbed for the traditional greetings. Other single females choose to band together and take each other out to dinner and a movie, rather than spend the evening alone.
However, before you start thinking that being single on Valentine's Day is the worst of all possible fates, think again. Even if you are lucky enough to have a special someone on February 14th, you aren't exempt from the agony that this day can carry with it.
This is where it gets tough for the guys. First off gentlemen, you must find the perfect card that expresses just how much you love your girlfriend, even if it means spending hours scouring every card store in the state.
