Staying healthy on a college campus isn't always the easiest task.
Between the extreme weather we've been having, coupled with the unfortunate spreading of different sicknesses around campus, it seems like staying healthy for the remainder of the season is going to be a challenge in and of itself.
One of the biggest health issues currently being posed on campus is the norovirus. An easily spread virus, a few precautions that students and staff should take into consideration to avoid getting sick to.
Clean hands are the most crucial part of staying healthy, especially on a college campus.
"Wash your hands with soap and hot water, all the way up to your wrists, frequently, especially before eating," said Nurse Practitioner at Sacred Heart, Courtney Davis.
In addition to washing your hands, it's very important to eat healthy.
"The best way to stay healthy is to have a balanced diet and to work out a little bit every day," said sophomore Ali Bredehorst.
Another means of staying healthy is drinking lots of water.
"Keep drinking even when you don't feel thirsty. Your body needs hydration to help kill off the bugs that are making you sick," said health specialist Victor Urbach.
Additionally, sleep is a very important factor in the health of students and staff alike.
"Lack of sleep will dramatically impair the activity of a key immune system component known as 'natural killer cells,'" said Urbach.
Weather, is another key factor to stayng healthy, although we cannot control the weather, we can certainly control how we dress.
Just because it's a small campus your walk isn't very long, doesn't mean that it's acceptable to dress for spring. It's worth your health to throw on a jacket before walking out the door.
The means of being healthy in a cold environment are quite simple: wear a coat. Cold weather is not solely responsible for making us sick, but it does play a large role.
Staying healthy, however difficult it may seem, is certainly possible on campus. FLIK offers a wide variety of healthy alternatives to the pizza, fries, and ice cream - it's up to the students and the staff to make the healthy decision.
Sleeping enough, eating healthy and being smart about the weather, is all it takes to maintain a healthy lifestyle on campus.
