This past weekend the Sacred Heart women's ice hockey team suffered two loses to RIT. On Friday the Tigers beat the Pioneers with a score of 6-2, while Saturday's match-up ended with RIT over Sacred Heart 3-1.
Friday evening was the first time the Pioneers had faced RIT.
RIT started the scoring after only 3:12 of play when Amanda Klassen scored to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
"I think they were a great team and since we have never played them before no one really knew what to expect," said senior Devon Gaslin.
The Tigers offense continued to put pressure on the Pioneers defense as they scored only two minutes later taking a 2-0 lead over Sacred Heart.
Sacred Heart answered back when sophomore Kate Dunlop sent the puck in the net after she collected a rebound off the pads of the RIT goalie after a shot from Jaclyn Rideout at the 9:18 mark.
With less than eight minutes left in the first period RIT's Sarah Dagg skated past Sacred Heart's defense to take a shot on Pioneer goalie Sarah Perry. Perry made the save from Dagg's first shot, but Dagg found an opening in the net and sent a shot past Perry to make the score 3-1.
"RIT was quick and had some girls that could stick handle really well allowing them to spread things out and work the puck around. In the end they just capitalized on little mistakes," said Gaslin.
RIT continued to put pressure on the Pioneers when Isabelle Richard and Amanda Klassen worked together to score the Tiger's next goal making the score 4-1.
The Pioneer defense worked hard to shut down the RIT offense but with 3:45 left in the second period the Tigers scored again to take a 5-1 advantage over Sacred Heart.
Dunlop and Rideout connected again for the Pioneers as Dunlop recorded her second goal of the game only two minutes later to make the score 5-2.
In the third period RIT scored their last goal to make the final score 6-2 and recording the win over the Pioneers.
