Sacred Heart's women's ice hockey team kicked off their 2007-08 season at the end of September.
Although the team has 10 returning players and 13 new freshmen they got off to a rough start. They lost their first three games to Maine, then two more to Vermont. They finally got on the right track at home beating Norwich 4.1
With the leadership of senior captains Devon Gaslin and Gina Arnone, and assistant captains Katelin McLaughlin and Whitney Dziama they have gone on to earn a record of 3-7-1.
Sacred Heart has been able to beat such teams and Salve Regina and URI, and tie Holy Cross with the help of goalies Sarah Perry, Jessica Little, and Caitlin Cahill.
"I think the game this past weekend went really well, everyone contributed, and it was just the kind of game needed to lead us into the next couple games.
as far as things we need to improve on: weve obviously had a rough start to our season and weve been working really hard in practice going back to basics and being a little more physical in our play and i think thats really helped us a lot," said senior Devon Gaslin
Freshman Caitilin Cahill made her first start for the Pioneers this past Saturday as they beat URI. She blocked 17 shots, helping Sacred Heart to get the win.
"In terms of how the game went, I think it helped us regain confidence after
a tough loss to Union, which could have been a winnable game for us. We
needed a win like this to take us into the last three games of the semester.
This game helped us get back to the hockey we know the team can play, both
mentally and physically,"said assistant coach Nicole Farrelly.
The next game for the Pioneers is on Wednesday Dec. 5 at Connecticut College.
