Men's basketball losing skid continues

Issue date: 11/29/07 Section: Sports
Sacred Heart's men's basketball team suffered two losses over the Thanksgiving break. On Tuesday, November 20th they lost to St. John's 76-49, and on Sunday, November 25, 2007 the lost to Albany 75-57.

"Well we played well in the first half of both games. Our problem is that we can't put together a complete game. We play well in the first half and then fall apart in the second half. As far as the losses go, as much as it stinks to lose, these loses don't hurt our team goal which is to win our conference this year," said senior Ryon Howard.

St. John's was a tough opponent for the Pioneers. The Red Storm came out to play with a great intensity, easily overmatching the Pioneers.

Liam Potter scored the first points for the Pioneers with a jump shot four minutes into the game.

Points by Drew Shubik, Brice Brooks, Mehmet Sahan, Josh Marshall, and Luke Granato helped Sacred Heart stay in the game against the Red Storm.

Three pointers by Ryon Howard and Ryan Litke also helped the Pioneers in their fight for victory.

While Sacred Heart played well, St. John's was a strong force. In the first half they scored seven three pointers, and Eugene Lawrence earned twelve points for them.

Going into half time the Red Storm led 48-21.

Lawrence scored 17 points and Justin Burrell scoring 15 points, which were the main components they needed to beat the Pioneers 76-49.

"We need to work on improving everyday in practice and focus on the next game ahead, we need to learn from these past games and work together as a team to overcome this hump, we all know we have the talent I think it is just a case of working at it to use the talent we have. In the game against Albany we came out in the first half strong and played better defense, we just need to take that energy into the second half, where we struggled to score and keep that energy going," said junior Liam Potter.

On Sunday the Pioneers traveled to Albany to take on the Great Danes.
