Sacred Heart exited the NEC women's Volleyball Tournament with a first round 3-0 loss to Robert aMorris this past Saturday.
"I think we played one of our better games. We did a lot of things very well and we were pretty close (to Robert Morris). We gave ourselves a lot of opportunities to make plays," said head coach Rob Machan.
Despite an early departure from the tournament hosted by LIU in Brooklyn, N.Y., the Pioneer's recorded the most wins in a season since becoming a Division I program.
The match against Robert Morris stayed just out of reach for all three games, ending with scores of 30-24, 30-25, and 30-19. Sophomores Alex Bavasi and Annie Archer led the Pioneers attack with 10 kills each.
The Colonials performance featured three players with 10 or more kills including Cassie Lee, who led the team with an astounding 17 kills to one error. Robert Morris went on to play Long Island University in the championship game where they lost to the undefeated Blackbirds 3-0.
Sacred Heart looks to continue improving the volleyball program next season with the help of the young team and new head coach.
"They all worked very hard throughout the whole season. If we had more time we could have done better, still we did really well this year," said Machan
The Pioneers ended their 2007 season record at 9-20 after coach Machan took over last March.
Now Machan has the opportunity to train with his players in the off-season as well as early on in the spring next year.
The departing seniors this year are Christine Duffy, Allison Peters and Tiffany Phoenix.
"I just enjoyed playing and being out there with my girls," said Phoenix.
"I did everything possible to ensure that we had the best possible chance of
succeeding, whether it is taking speed off the hit so that my defenders can have an easier dig, getting a kill, or just making the other team scramble about and in turn giving us a free ball so that we can run our offense more efficiently," said Phoenix.
