Duo ready for next step

Dave Mandler

Issue date: 11/29/07 Section: Sports
As if this year's disappointing record of 3-8 wasn't enough, Sacred Heart football is losing two of its all time great offensive weapons. Standout wide receiver Corey Bundy and running back Jason Payne will be graduating in May.
The offensive duo has been contributing to the Pioneer athletic community on the field and in the weight room for four years now. Throughout their careers, both have broken records, influenced teammates, and wowed crowds with their athletic ability and leadership skills.
Bundy and Payne are no strangers to high stress environments, having dealt with opposing defenses, hard nose coaching and strenuous weight room lifting sessions. However much lays ahead for the duo as they enter the far more stressful business world, or even more stressful environment in the professional football world.
Payne, who always seemed to be in the spotlight throughout his career, finished the season on a higher note than most when he amounted over 800 all purpose yards in the final four games of the season. Payne led all scoring with 13 touchdowns and 78 total points.
To nobody's surprise the always-healthy Payne, who had not sustained an injury in his football career, played another full season and in 11 games finished with an impressive 1300 yards on 186 carries. He averaged a league high 6.9 yards every attempt, and also averaged 116 yards per game.
Payne holds multiple school records, having the single highest average per carry in school history at 6.9 yards. With 1,353 yards this year Payne is second on the schools all-time list in yards gained in a season.
He best game of his career came this year this year against Marist when he carried the ball 30 times for 209 yards and two rushing touchdowns.
Payne is a Business Administration major with a concentration on marketing. He has also been involved in real estate the past couple years, and will be taking the state brokerage exam in the up coming months.
"Whatever I decide to do in life whether it be my dream of playing professional football, or starting my own real-estate company, I owe a lot of my success to the people who have surrounded me throughout my experiences here at Sacred Heart University. Corey has been a great friend to me but just as important as he has been these past four years this is a place where teachers and coaches are your friends too, they want to see us succeed and we're going to do just that", said Payne.
