Cross country breaks records

As all good things must come to and end for the Sacred Heart cross country team. The fall 2007 season needs to be remembered for all of its great achievements and records earned from both the men and women's teams.

The season kicked off when the cross country team attended the Fordham Invitational at Van Cordlant Park in Bronx, N.Y. on Sept. 8. Out of the combined 22 teams that attended the invitational, the men's team placed 11th with a score of 322. With a combined score of 296 and a total of 23 teams in the women's race, Sacred Heart's women's team placed 12th.

The next event the cross-country team attended was the CCSU Ted Invitational on Sept. 15 in New Britain. For the men's team, it was the first time ever in Sacred Heart history that they were able to beat Boston University and Monmouth University.

The top five runners for the men's team moved up on the All-Time list for the Cross Country program. These were junior David Jones, junior John Kenworthy, junior Luis German, freshman Andrew Houghtalen, and freshman Ryan Murdoch.

That day the women's team great strength by beating every team in NEC except for Quinnipiac. The top 10 women runners all accomplished their personal best times.

On Sept. 29, the Pioneers attended the Fairfield University Invitational. It was the second consecutive year that the men and women teams swept the Fairfield Invitational team titles. Sacred Heart claimed 1st out of the total 7 teams that attended. For the men's team, it was the third team title overall and third in the past five years.

Freshman Samantha Troy passed four other runners in the last 300 meters of the race to give the women their three-point margin of victory over Fordham. Jones claimed his third career top five finish.

After these past three races, by Oct. 6 the Pioneers were ready to take on the New England Championship at Franklin Park in Boston, M.A. It was the best-ever finish for the men placing 26th while the women took 13th.
