Relationships take work, plain and simple. You cannot always be the one to give or always the one to take, finding the balance is what it is all about. Having a relationship in college is definitely difficult, but not impossible.
Being in my last year of college, I don't mind not having a boyfriend. Yes, I wouldn't mind doing the relationship type stuff, but right now its time to enjoy my senior year and my time with friends.
In May, we will all be faced with a transition from the college world to the real world. I know there are some people I will never talk to again and others I will keep in touch with. We as people evolve and so do our relationships.
If you are dating someone in college and then one of you or both of you graduates, where do you go from there? The locations of jobs or homes could cause a problem. If you have done the long distance thing and are now both within range of the other than I can see it working after college.
You also must ask yourself are we on the same page? What do you both want to do with your lives? If one of you gets a job and the other can't be bothered and just plays videogames all day than you will probably feel held back by your lazy significant other.
I think in order for a college relationship to transition into the real world both parties must decide what they want from their professional lives and their relationship. If both individuals are completely honest with their wants and needs from the start then there shouldn't be a problem. This is not to say that there won't be problems but I think that making the effort is what really counts.
If you are doubtful, remember you won't know if it can work until you try.
