Issue date: 11/29/07 Section: A & E
On Dec. 1, Jewish singer/songwriter Shawn Fogel teams up with fellow Jewish musicians, The LeeVees to perform at the Congregation Rodef Shalom in Bridgeport.
Adam Garder of Guster and Dave Schneider of the Zambonis first formed the LeeVees. According to the band's Myspace webpage, their new album, "Hanukkah Rocks" is comprised of rock, indie-pop tracks that are all solely about Hanukkah.
"Name four great Hanukkah songs," the LeeVees stated on their Myspace page. "Not easy, huh? 'Dreidel, Spin, Spin, Spin' is a fun little ditty but let's face it, it doesn't exactly rock and/or roll. Even the great Jewish songwriters, from Irving Berlin to Lieber and Stoller, only wrote Christmas songs. The festival of lights could really use some tunes!"
According to a New York press release, Fogel will be joining The LeeVees on tour at synagogues and Jewish centers across the East Coast and Midwest. Fogel, who often accompanies the band, plays bass, guitar, keyboard, and performs background vocals.
Fogel recently finished up his own East Coast tour, according to the press release, promoting his newest EP, "One Day on the Desert." The EP, which was released Oct. 31, through Recordhead, is a lead to Fogel's full-length LP scheduled for release in 2008.
"Looking like a modern, somewhat Jewish Buddy Holly, Fogel shows maturity in song-craft that kicks off with Adam Duritz-like vocals in 'The Season I Love Best' and follows through to the lazy, almost bedroom-pop swagger of 'Athens,'" according to FencePost, a music website for new artists.
"While each song is unique in its own right, they all fit the Fogel mold of pop-each song is catchy-as-hell and packs a powerful pop punch."
"He has an upbeat Beatles feel to his music," said junior Michele Gannon. "It's happy summertime convertible music that sounds like it should be in the soundtrack of a movie."
Fogel's music also stands apart from other artists, playing and recording almost every instrument on the album. Fogel includes a wide arrange of instruments including the clarinet, saxophone, harmonica, recorder, and banjo.
