The Sacred Heart women's basketball season began their 2007-08 season this past Friday against URI, losing 62-43.
"I think we came out with good energy," said junior Kaitlin Sowinski. "We need to work on playing as a team and accomplishing our goal together. We're a very new and young team this year so it is going to take some time to get in the flow of things. Unfortunately, we walked away with a loss on Friday but we get back in the gym, work on improving ourselves and step on the court Wednesday with the determination to learn from our mistakes and win."
The Pioneers took the lead within two minutes of the start of the game. After that point scoring went back and forth between Sacred Heart and URI. Ten minutes into the first half the Rams took a lead that they would hold onto for the remainder of the game.
Kaitlin Sowinski's eight points and Khalia Cain's six points in the first half helped to keep the Pioneers within reach of URI. They went into half trailing 28-21.
The intensity of the game picked up in the second half.
Points scored by URI's Safi Mojidi and Crystal Bellinger helped them to increase their lead to 17, only six minutes into the second half.
With six more points from Cain and five more from Sowinski, as well as points by Stephanie Ryan, Lizzie Gruber, and Maureen Reilly the Pioneers were able to close the gap to ten points.
Although Sacred Heart played well, URI was a tough team to keep up with. Sowinski's 13 points and 11 rebounds were the highest of the game from either team, but not enough to keep up with the Rams.
"URI was a skilled team, it was a rough way to start off the season. Now that all the preseason jitters are out, we hope to do better next game," said junior Khalia Cain
Sacred Heart's next game is against Fairfield in the Arena at Harbor Yard at 4:30 p.m.
