The women's swim team has proved that records are meant to be broken.

In last Saturday's 135-94 loss to Iona College, sophomore Johannah Kos set another school record with a time of 1:02.13 in the first 100 yards of the medley relay.

Kos' strong start led the Pioneer's to finish second in the 400-yard medley relay.

"When I'm starting my race I just hope to do the best I can at that time. Accomplishing that as a sophomore feels good and it's exciting, but I just hope that I can reach my best times because I know I have a lot more to give," said Kos.

Kos continued to improve upon her individual achievements as she won the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.29, beating three Gael swimmers and two fellow Pioneers.

"I think Johannah did an awesome job and she's a great competitor and gives it her all every time she races. I think she has a lot of potential and will continue to break more records in the next few years," said senior Laura Johnson.

Freshman Katie Marshall also added points for Sacred Heart when she finished first in her individual event of the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:11.55. Marshall finished approximately five seconds ahead of her Iona opponent.

The Pioneers battled through many illnesses on the team, including two swimmers involved in the medley relay, and focused on coming together as a team to be successful against the Gaels.

"Our focus as a team has narrowed and is positive. We approach each meet with good expectations both as a team and individuals," said Coach Richard Ludemann. "We have really come together to approach both our meets and workouts to be as effective as possible in all events. We have multi-talented athletes whom can do more than just one event. Therefore, we work each individual's strengths to benefit the team as a whole. Everybody does their best basically to pick up the remaining slack."

Sacred Heart's freshman Jackie Balder and senior Adriana Morgan gave the Pioneers the second and third place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle event with times of 11:10.18 and 11:14.94, respectively.
