When Ricarti Mendes scored the winning goal against the Farleigh Dickenson University Knights on Nov. 3, the men's soccer team clinched the Northeast Conference playoff berth and claimed the third seed in their division.

The men's team ended their regular season with a record of 10-7-1.

"We had the most wins this season that Sacred Heart has ever had since we became division 1. Our hard work really paid off." said senior Tony Shoshi.

The NEC semifinals are being held this weekend and will be hosted at Monmouth University, who were the 2006 NEC Champions last year and are the number one seed this year.

"The games this weekend are the most important games of the season," said senior Brian Downs. "We have done all the work to get us to this point, but now we just need to concentrate and come out of this weekend as NEC champs."

The men's soccer team will be leaving early Thursday morning to attend a banquet with all four teams who made the playoffs, including, Monmouth, Central Connecticut State University, and St. Francis of PA.

"The first place team during the regular season plays the fourth place team and then the second place team plays the third place team," said Downs.

The winner of both games will then play each other in the NEC Finals.

"We play on Friday against St. Francis of PA, who we beat during the regular season," said Downs. "When we win that game we will play the winner of Monmouth and CCSU on Sunday in the Final."

The men's soccer team has spent much of their time practicing and preparing for this season since August.

"The team has been together since pre-season and this weekend is what we have been waiting for since last year when we did not make the playoffs. We are ready to play," said senior Ricarti Mendes.

According to Mendes, what got their team into the playoffs was their hard work and determination to make sure that this season would not end like last year.

"Nobody wanted to be in the same situation as last year," said Shoshi.

The game between Sacred Heart University and St. Francis of PA on Friday is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.

The winner of the NEC tournament on Sunday will advance to the NCAA Tournament, playing the best teams in the nation, that is expected to begin on Nov. 23 or 24.
