On Saturday November 10th Sacred Heart's football team played their final game of the season. The team lost the season finale to Robert Morris on the road 41-31. The Pioneers finished the season with a record of 3-8 and the team was winless in the Northeast conference.
Despite the loss there were many seniors who shined in their last game. Senior running back Jason Payne was one of them. Payne, in his last collegiate game was given the ball a career high 35 times and it paid off as he racked up 185 yards on the ground, scoring three touchdowns, two of them receiving.
Robert Morris got on the scoreboard early in the first quarter, jumping out to a 7-0 lead. Thanks to the efforts of Payne and the offensive line the Pioneers answered back, scoring on the ensuing possession tying the game at 7-7.
Sacred Heart took the lead early in the second quarter. Junior kicker Joe Schroeder drilled a 22-yard field goal to put the Pioneers up 10-7 with 13:30 to play in the first half. This would be the only lead they would have in the game.
The Colonials went on a ten play, 65 yard drive, marching down the field to take the lead for good on one of the numerous touchdown passes throughout the afternoon on the Pioneer secondary to take a 14-10 lead.
The Pioneers went three and out on their next possession giving the Colonials good field position and they took advantage scoring again in the air to take a 21-10 lead late in the second quarter.
The Pioneers seemed to be getting the offense going again thanks to Payne as he rushed for three consecutive first downs, however the drive was stalled by sophomore quarterback Dale Fink when he threw and interception, it was his first of three interceptions that afternoon.
Robert Morris started the drive but was forced to punt after great defensive efforts by senior defensive linemen Bill Hayden and senior defensive linemen Brian Goodman.
The previous defensive stand would be one that the Pioneers would capitalize on, going on a six play, 54 yard scoring drive ending on a pass from Fink to Payne. The ever important extra point sailed wide left making the score 21-16.
