Sacred Heart's women's crew team ended their fall season this past Sunday at the Bill Praxton Regatta in Philadelphia.
Six different boats raced in the regatta.
"This weekend showed the incredible growth of Sacred Heart Rowing; we were able to blow past our usual competition and give the typical "big hitters" a run for their money," said senior Jill Crisci.
The first boat to race was the novice eight. It consisted of all freshmen and was stroked by Nicole Settembrito. This boat has worked well together all season, and finished on top. They beat out Penn State, Philadelphia University, and Loyola College with a time of 6:07.38.
Sacred Heart's other novice boat also had a great race. The boat had four rowers and was coxed by junior Mallory Berko. Their competition included Penn State, Stonybrook, Dowling, and American University. The novice four's time of 6:22 earned them third place.
In addition to the two novice boats, the Pioneers raced a JV eight boat. This boat earned fourth place with a time of 6:00.57. Freshman Rebecca Caimano made one of her first appearances as a coxswain. She was able to help Sacred Heart in the race against Drexel, Hiawatha Island BC, and Philadelphia University.
The Pioneers also raced three varsity boats; they had two four-person boats, and one eight person boat.
The first varsity four-person boat raced against Penn State, Stonybrook, Scranton, Wharton, and NYU. Sophomore Kristin Comeau stroked and helped the boat to finish with a time of 6:07.1. This earned them a second place finish, losing only to Penn State by half a boat length.
Captain Caitlin Rousseau stroked the second varsity four-person boat. They finished with a time of 6:07.7. This earned them third place, right in the middle of Dowling, American, Scranton, and Penn State.
The varsity eight-person boat finished in fourth place with a time of 5:46.3. They raced against Rochester, Dowling, Hiawatha BC, Loyola, and Temple. With the help of captain Melissa Allen stroking, the Pioneers were able to beat Temple by one second.
"This season, in my opinion, was one of our most powerful seasons. We put out some of our strongest crews that our team has ever seen. We have been working hard to get where we are, being entered in the MAAC conference, and getting invited back to the Head of the Charles in Boston, beating twice as many boats as last fall. It has been quite an accomplishment, and we are only continuing to grow with every season that passes," said junior Katie Schlosser. "Although we didn't win every race, we have come a long way, and I think we ended the season on a great note. We will only continue to get stronger and faster over the winter, in preparation for our spring season."
The Pioneers will not have another race until the spring, but they hope to be as successful then as they were at the end of this season.
