Dear Red Wave,
Robert Frost wrote in a 1959 Sports Illustrated guest column about how he understands Americans would rather watch a game than play a game.
He also claimed he took the road less traveled, but as for me, I took the one with the Stag in it.
The time has come to iron your Pioneer Pride tee shirts, sport the Sacred Heart basketball caps, and raise your boisterous voices a bit louder than usual.
The men and women's hoops teams will take on the Fairfield Stags at the Arena at Harbor Yard this Sunday and it is crucial this extended invitation not be taken lightly.
On Monday the turnout was great, but unfortunately those Army Black Knights out-lasted our men's squad. Despite the outcome, coach Dave Bike made a good point afterwards.
"It's not the first time a highly touted team started the season and not played well, and we won't be the last."
Don't you think it's your job to help them regain composure and cheer the way you did up until last year's Northeast conference final game?
A 0-2 start means absolutely nothing, especially in non-conference play. Last year was a lot of fun wasn't it? Rooting for the men and women's teams, who both took their opponents to the brink in their respective championship games, opened up a whole new world for us fans.
People have complained our little school nestled in Fairfield lacks the fan-mojo other powerhouses such as Duke or North Carolina possess. Well, here is your chance to alter that.
On the men's side, a buffet table of sharpshooters and high-flying dunks is at your disposal and gasping at Chauncey Hardy throw down an emphatic dunk is worth the price of admission if you ask me. Ryan Litke's NBA-range 3-point missiles, Drew Shubik's magician-like passes and Brice Brooks' dominant post-play fall under that category as well.
On the women's side, we are about to witness the post-Amanda Pape, Kerri Burke and Jasmine Walker era. A little scary, you say? You couldn't be more wrong. The strong recruiting by Ed Swanson has lured several promising prospects to join forces with center Kaitlin Sowinski and Fairfield transfer Stephanie Ryan. Picked fourth in the NEC preseason polls, this team could make some noise.
That of course could be in jeopardy if you don't make noise yourselves.
Owning bragging rights for the Merritt Parkway Showdown would be a huge stepping-stone to reaching our goal of eventually becoming the loudest pack of die-hard college basketball fanatics in southern Connecticut.
Tasting sweet victory over those Stags will do wonders for our athletic program and I challenge you to become a part of it.
Maybe in the process, we can hang some antlers on the wall of the Pitt Center.
I'll see you at the arena.
Your leader,
Big Red
