On your mark, get set, go.
On Sunday, Nov. 18 Sacred Heart University sophomore, Derek Brown will be participating in the Philadelphia Marathon to raise money for Neurofibromatosis (NF).
Brown has previously participated in two other marathons in Boston and Chicago, but the Philadelphia marathon has Brown running for a cause.
"My brother was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis when he was 3 years old," said Brown.
"He is currently 16 years old and showing minor symptoms, but I don't want to stand around until something more serious manifests."
According to the website National Institute of Neurological Disorder, "The neurofibromatoses are genetic disorders of the nervous system that primarily affect the development and growth of neural (nerve) cell tissues."
These disorders cause tumors to grow on nerves and produce other abnormalities such as skin changes and bone deformities.
Being that there is no cure for the disease at this present time, Brown said he is doing whatever he can to support the cause.
"I want to see an end to this disorder, so when I researched and found out about this marathon I immediately contacted the Run4NF organization and requested a spot in the race," said Brown.
Unfortunately, when the Run4NF organization contacted Brown, he was informed he couldn't participate in the event since he wasn't part of a team.

Brown, however, was determined to participate in the event anyway.
Sophomore Justin Wilber, Brown's friend and suitemate, supports his decision to run the marathon and knows he will succeed.
"Derek Brown is an extremely determined individual and will stop at nothing to achieve his goals," said Wilber.
Sacred Heart graduate student and nursing major Meaghan O'Doherty has dealt with causes similar to this one and has always tried to do her part to help.
"I in a sorority whose cause is suicide awareness and domestic violence, so we always appreciate those who are willing to help and offer their time," said O'Doherty.
