The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) has chosen SHU to participate in a national initiative called, Core Commitments: Educating Students for Personal and Social Responsibility.

According to the AAC&U Web site, the organization is an educational community strongly committed to the value of a liberal and liberating education. It calls on its members to test and adopt new ways of engaging students with core questions about their ethical responsibilities to self and others, and about their responsibilities as citizens in a diverse democracy.

"AAC&U is an elite, premiere, high-ranking organization with over 1,000 colleges and universities a part of it," said Dr. Michelle Loris, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and chair of the University's Core Committee.

In addition to SHU, 24 other universities and colleges including Miami University, Ohio; Tulane University, La.; and Rollins College, Fla. have also recently been invited to participate.

AAC&U has identified five key dimensions of personal and social responsibility that form the core of this initiative. These dimensions are: striving for excellence, cultivating personal and academic integrity, contributing to a larger community, taking seriously the perspective of others, and developing competence in ethical and moral reasoning.

SHU's acceptance into the organization began with a proposal written by Loris, which took three months to write.

According to Loris, the proposal's main goal is to further the University's curriculum and co-curriculum by integrating the five dimensions AAC&U stresses. The University starts to do that through SHU's Common Core and Freshman Mentor Program and Freshman Advisement Program. This project, however, is for all colleges and all constituents within the university. It will include the participation of all sectors of the university throughout the program's duration.

Loris said she believes the proposal shows that SHU already has a commitment to those dimensions. The five dimensions are very consistent with SHU's mission statement and strategic plan and many of its programs, centers, and institutes, she said.
