The bowling team was invited to The National Collegiate women's bowling Championship that took place on April 12 to April 14, where it placed fifth.
"It's really exciting for us. We've worked incredibly hard all season for it," said Sarah Novotny, junior, Ridge, N.Y.
"It has been a fun and exciting year with some ups and downs. We were so excited to have made nationals this year and we have worked really hard this season to get us to this point," said Jamie Manzo, sophomore, Manalapan, N.J.
Eight teams were chosen to participate in the competition that is taking place in Apopka, Fla. The other seven teams are the University of Central Missouri, Fairleigh Dickinson University, University of Maryland, Minnesota State University, University of Nebraska, New Jersey City University, and Vanderbilt University who took first place and won the championship.
"We have worked hard all year and battled it out. There were times where we lost some good matches that were really close, and there were other tournaments where we bowled really well and beat some of the top-ranked teams like FDU and Vanderbilt," said Amanda Lulu, junior, Leicester, Mass.
It was Sacred Heart's third year participating in this NCAA tournament."This year has been a great rebuilding year for us. We had a strong freshman class come in that has really come through for us when we needed them. This is a great bunch of girls with a lot of talent, and I'm so proud of them all," said Christina Onderdonk, senior, Guilderland, N.Y.
With a good season behind them, the Sacred Heart bowling team was optimistic going into the tournament. In the first game of first round, Marissa Gagliardi, freshman, North Branford, got a score of 236, while Lulu had 224. At this time in the tournament, Lulu placed in the top ten individual averages. Onderdonk received tenth overall and Gagliardi got fourteenth overall.
In the second round Sacred Heart was victorious over New Jersey City. The Pioneers eliminated them from the competition with a score of 57-27-0.
"The tournament itself is stacked with great teams, as would be expected. But unlike previous years, there is no one team that is leaps and bounds ahead of the crowd. Everyone participating in this tournament has beaten everyone else at some point during the season. After the selection process, the entire season is erased and it really comes down to who can come through in the clutch," said Onderdonk.
The Sacred Heart bowling team's head coach is Becky Kregling who is in her fourteenth season as coach. She was elected into the Women's All-Star Association Hall of Fame and has won ten titles during her bowling career.
Sacred Heart made it to the third round of the tournament but was defeated by Fairleigh Dickinson who was the returning champ.
Onderdonk landed in tenth place with an average of 217.00, while Gagliardi landed not far beyond in thirteenth place with an average of 214.00.
