Finding healthy food can be a challenge for students when away at college. FLIK looks to help with the addition of a new chef and a healthier attitude in the kitchen.
It is undoubtedly frustrating when your class schedule keeps you on campus for most of the day without the proper break needed to catch breakfast, lunch or dinner without the felling of being rushed.
Students often times find themselves eating and then running off to their next class, or getting a snack during a class break - often leaving very little time to actually look at what is being consumed.
"I'm usually pretty busy when on campus and sometimes I will just go grab something real quick in between my classes. If I'm pressed for time, I don't really pay that much attention to whether it is healthy or not. I get hungry and grabbing whatever is around is just so easy and accessible sometimes," said Courtney Pustay, senior, Huntington, N.Y.
Not just at college, but also in today's fast-paced society, it seems that less people are avoiding the task in actually taking time to properly find food that their body needs.
Picking something up that is quick, convenient, and satisfactory enough to not feel hungry is the choice made by many.
Although FLIK has always offered fresh fruit, salads, and vegetables with meals, healthy foods have never been presented in creative and appealing way to students.
Upon walking into FLIK, the eye seems to easily fall onto pizza, bagels, sandwiches, hamburgers and the usual fried items that can be unappealing to anyone looking to consume less complex and calorie-dense foods.
Sacred Heart has been actively looking to improve FLIK since hiring a new chef at the beginning of the Fall 2006 semester.
Since that time, new Executive Chef Lelio Vieux has spread his vision throughout FLIK to help ensure anyone being served food at Sacred Heart has a choice to go with the original offerings or with something a little more healthy.
