Last Sunday was the opening of the CAA portion of Sacred Heart's schedule this season. Sacred Heart won against Robert Morris by the score of 10-7.

There are six other teams in the same conference as Sacred Heart that they will be playing this season. Robert Morris is the first of these six. When looking back at the last meeting between Sacred Heart and Robert Morris, Sacred Heart was victorious. They won 15-9 this time last season. The Pioneers were able to do it again during this game and they were able to see the victory in the second half of the game.

In the first period Sacred Heart was ahead by one but then fell back in the second period with a tie score of 5-5. Although Robert Morris out shot SHU by 12-5, they were able to come back in the second half.

"It was a hard fought victory that we've been due for for awhile," said Pat Healy, senior, Towson, Md.

The third period was the turning point of the game. Five straight goals started in this period and continued into the fourth period making the score 10-6. Tony Tanzi, junior, Mahopac, N.Y. started this run with an assist by Bobby Rushton, sophomore, West Islip, N.Y. Tanzi had a total of three goals in this game.

Tanzi then assisted Bobby Karl, sophomore, Clifton Park, N.Y. This was followed by a goal from Dan Mesler, freshman, Branchport, N.Y.

"In the second half of the game the defense came to play and we shut them down," said Ricardo Vargas, Falls Church, Va.

The fourth goal of the five straight goals came from Timmy Katz, freshman, Freeport, N.Y.

The last goal for the Pioneers came in the fourth period and was scored by Nick Russo, sophomore, Lindenhurst, N.Y. who was assisted by Casey Kirch, senior, Newtown.

"It was a tough first half but we really pulled through in the second half to get the victory," said Kirch.

Peter Greco, senior, Hamburg, N.Y. scored the first two goals of the game and was named CAA Co-Player of the week by setting a school record for assists in a game that Sacred Heart played against Wagner on March 3. Within the CAA rankings, Sacred Heart offense is ranked second in the areas of shot percentage at .273, assists per game at 5.75, and ground balls per game which came in at 35.75. They are ranked third in points per game which is 15.50.

Sacred Heart lived up to these rankings in this game. Robert Morris was able to get one last goal in the fourth period but weren't able to hustle enough, leaving the score at 10-7.

CAA Lacrosse is gaining force this season. The league has an impressive three teams that are ranked in this week's national lacrosse poll, however the 2007 CAA Preseason Coaches Poll ranked Sacred Heart sixth out of seven places, which isn't so great.

Maybe Sacred Heart can prove the Coaches Poll wrong and keep on winning. After the two previous losses against Manhattan and University of Mass, this win has given them a boost in confidence.

"We finally played together as a team and it showed up in the end," said Russo. The team's next game is a home game against Drexel this upcoming Saturday and 1 p.m.
