On Friday March 23, the student events team hosted a concert featuring the Goo Goo Dolls and Augustana in the Pitt Center.
"I couldn't wait for the concert, especially since my little brother and one of my best friends from high school were coming up to see them. We are all fans of the Goo Goo Dolls and overall I couldn't ask for a better performance. The concert was terrific and you could tell by how much the crowd was singing along," said Maureen Garvey, junior, Stamford.
The concert took place from 8 p.m. until10:30 p.m. and tickets were sold to SHU students for a reasonable price of $20 and non-SHU students paid $40.
"I definitely enjoyed the concert; my friends and I ran late and didn't arrive until the warm up band had started. Unfortunately, that meant missing the opening band Augustana. The only thing I didn't like was that there were no big screens in the Pitt center showing the performances. As a result you couldn't see much of anything unless you were in the front of the crowd, which we weren't," said Jackie Ferraro, junior, Coram, N.Y.
The sold out concert, was a big success and with the cooperation of SHU students and members of the community the performance was able to take place.
"I thought the turnout would be like it was. With all tickets sold the estimated crowd was about 5,000. The Goo Goo Dolls are very popular among both young and older adults. Augustana was more popular among the teenager demographic. I thought it would sell-out and I'm sure glad it did. About half of the tickets sold were to students while the other half was sold to the general public. Fans started lining up around 10 a.m. and stood outside even through the rain. There was a meet and greet with the Goo Goo Dolls before the show and tickets for that were given out by local radio stations. About fifteen fans were able to exchange pleasantries and then they were able to take pictures with the group. Overall, things went very well. We had over one hundred and fifty volunteers throughout the day to help set up. We set up the stage Thursday night and all the other equipment Friday morning. There were EMT's, Fairfield Fire Department and Police Department, as well as Public Safety Officers. There were no major problems during the concert," said Brian Knox, Program Assistant at Sacred Heart University.
