Alumni and local native, John Ratzenberger, is one of eleven competitors performing on ABC's television series, "Dancing With The Stars."

"John Ratzenberger is a proud alumnus from SHU who received an honorary doctorate in 1992," said Marie Donahue, Director of Alumni & Parent Relations. "I was so excited to see him wearing a Sacred Heart University sweatshirt on 'Dancing With The Stars.'"

According to a recent article in The Connecticut Post, Ratzenberger was selected to be on the show after one of the original dancers dropped out. He has filled the spot for actor Vincent Pastore.

Because Pastore decided to drop out early, Ratzenberger and his partner, Edyta Sliwinska, began their training for the season later than the rest of the dancers.

The competition consists of two dances per round, and if the couple's scores are good enough, they will be able to advance to the following round. The first-round dances performed were the cha-cha for the men and the foxtrot for the women.

Ratzenberger and Sliwinska danced on March 19, and scored 17 out of a possible 30 points.

"I think it's great that he was selected to be on 'Dancing With The Stars,'" said Alison Roach, freshman, Bridgeport.

This is the fourth running season of "Dancing With The Stars" and Ratzenberger is going up against other celebrities such as Laila Ali, Clyde Drexler, Joey Fatone, and Heather Mills.

At the age of 60, Ratzenberger is the oldest contestant featured on the show.

Ratzenberger is most prominently known for his role in the '80s sitcom, "Cheers," as postman Cliff Clavin.

"I'm actually excited to watch him on television," said Lauren Shilstone, senior, Hicksville, N.Y. "Who would have thought the guy from 'Cheers' would be on a dancing show."

Ratzenberger the host and producer of his own show, "John Ratzenberger's Made in America" has dabbled in work as an author as well, publishing his own book titled, "We've Got It Made in America: A Common Man's Salute to An Uncommon Country."

According to the actor's personal Web site, Ratzenberger.com, his show and book aim to promote awareness among Americans. It touches on the issues of patriotism, the American manufacturing industry, and awareness of environmental and economical concerns in America.

"Dancing With The Stars" will be aired every Monday night at 8 p.m. Ratzenberger will dance with Sliwinska on March 26 to complete the first round. Based on their results, they will either be eliminated or 'cheers' will be in order as they advance to the next round.
