Delta Phi Kappa is honoring empowered women everywhere, throughout the month of March.
Delta Phi Kappa, a sorority on campus, has dedicated month of March to the support of women empowerment. The aim of the sorority is to encourage young women within the community to commemorate women all over the world, who have accomplished great things.
"We not only focus on famous women, but we also dedicate this month to mothers, grandmothers, and other important women in our lives," said Monica Concha, senior, North Babylon, N.Y.
Jennifer Cardillo, junior, Hoboken N.J., president of the SHU chapter believes that this cause is important. "We all need to remember the women who impacted us centuries ago as well as in recent years," said Cardillo.
According to Cardillo, the sorority is planning events to spread the message about women's empowerment. After the opening ceremonies on March 27, the sorority is planning a day of pampering with Mary Kay cosmetics.
On March 25 the girls will be participating in a sit-out to resemble homeless women everywhere, the event will take place on the FLIK patio. The money raised from the event will go to Mi Casa, a home for pregnant teens and teenage mothers.
"I've been a part of 4 women's months, and my favorite event we hold is the sit-out. We get a small taste of what homeless women go through. This event allows us to spread awareness as well as raise money to help keep homeless women off the streets," said Aisha Lubin, senior, Brockton, Mass.
The university community is welcome to attend all the events sponsored by Delta Phi Kappa.
"On March 27, we also are hosting a panel based on women's health issues in which a doctor and a nurse will be there to answer any questions and speak about certain topics," said Cardillo.
Other members of Delta Phi Kappa have gotten involved all over campus. "I've used my position as a RA to inform my residents and others guests about interesting facts, I try to volunteer or take part in fundraisers that help support and empower females, no matter their age," said Lena Tankeng, Yonkers, N.Y.
