After a weekend of games, the Pioneers took fourth place in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championship hosted by New Jersey City University. (26)
The ECAC was held this past weekend, Friday March 9th to Sunday March 11th, at the AMF Midstate Lanes in East Brunswick, N.J. The tournament hosted many schools including Fairleigh Dickinson, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Delaware State University, Morgan State University, Saint Peter's College, Sacred Heart University, and NJCU.
As the first day of the tournament came to a conclusion most of the standings would remain the same throughout the tournament. The Fairleigh Dickinson Knights clenched the first place spot after a 3-1 win over UMES, giving the Knights their fifth tournament title of the season.
Not only was FDU ranked the top seed for the playoff rounds, but they are also ranked in fourth nationally between all Division I, II, and III colleges. The game that cemented their win was a 3-out-of-5 series versus UMES. They won in four games with scores of 206-191, 200-225, 221-181 and 279-247.
Another series that FDU had to overcome to seal their ranking as number one was Sacred Heart. Even though they played a best of five series, the two teams ended up facing off in a sixth game.
After a tie in the first game, the deciding factor of the series came down to five pins. The Pioneers lost to FDU with scores of 217-217, 207-243, 243-180, 215-246, 254-170, and 224-219.
In the consolation matches, Sacred Heart again faced FDU and tied the series with wins in the third and fourth games, but would ultimately loose to the Knights. The Pioneers held a 2-4 record in their NCAA matches and would end the tournament in fourth place overall.
UMES took NJCU's only lose of the tournament by a 3-1 victory to grasp a spot in the finals. The final scores were 217-212, 203-185, 219-267, and 234-179 over the second seed, NJCU.
Morgan State University a fifth seed team ended the tournament in fifth place. The Bears defeated a, number 15, nationally ranked Delaware State University, as well as Saint Peter's college during the consolation matches.
The DSU Hornets had one win throughout the tournament over Howard University. They beat Howard 3-0 in the consolation matches. The Howard University Bison were 1-6 in the NCAA competition.
The final standings after the third day of the quadruple Baker qualifier was Fairleigh Dickinson in first place, New Jersey City in second, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in third, Sacred Heart in fourth, Morgan State in fifth, Delaware State in sixth, and Howard University in seventh place.
The Pioneers travel to Nashville this Saturday to compete in the two day Vanderbilt Invitational.
