Sacred Heart men's ice hockey put a damper on their senior night, by losing to Army 4-2.
Army made the first goal of the night off a rebound that was initially stopped by senior Jason Smith. Freshman Nick Johnson scored his fourth goal of the year no less than 26 seconds later.
As a result of Johnson's goal the Pioneers were neck-and-neck with Army with a score of 1-1.
Still in the first period, the Black Knights proceeded to answer the goal made by Johnson. The goal brought the Black Knights back into the lead with a score of 2-1, and with 3:58 left in the first period.
In the next period, sophomore Kyle Tyll tied the score at 2 apiece for the Pioneers. Army, again, answered the opposition's goal with one of their own, putting them back in the lead with a score of 3-2. The goal was recorded by Army's junior Luke Flicek would also score an insurance goal later in the game.
"We definitely did not play Saturday like we did Friday. It seemed like Army was hungrier and they were capitalizing on their chances. Turnovers cost us and we need to learn from this now and make adjustments," said Smith.
Smith ends the regular season with 18 saves for the Pioneers. "We will bounce back from this and simply play the hockey that other teams fear and we will go all the way," said Smith.
The Pioneers will host the winner of the play-in game between Canisius and AIC in the quarterfinals on Mar. 10.
