Sophomore Kaitlin Sowinski's near triple-double drove the Pioneers women's basketball team to a 68-56 victory over Mount St. Mary's Monday night.

Sowinski finished the game with 11 points, nine blocks and nine rebounds, just shy of an unconventional triple-double. Her nine blocks breaks her previous school record (seven) for blocks in a game.

Seniors Jasmine Walker and Amanda Pape both finished with double-doubles again. Pape had 28 points along with 10 rebounds to secure her seventh double-double of the season while Walker poured in 15 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for her eighth.

After gaining an early lead, Sacred Heart let its guard down and fell into an early double-digit hole. Mount St. Mary's standout guard Dita Krumberga drilled a pair of three's to put her squad up 11.

"She's a very tough match-up for anyone," said Pioneers coach Ed Swanson about Krumberga, who shot 3-6 from behind the arch in the first half.

The Pioneers would grab the lead back with a little over five minutes left to play in the half, thanks to a 13-1 run sparked by Walker and Pape, who scored 25 of the first 27 Pioneer points.

After four straight free throws by the Mount in the last minute of the half, the game was at a 32-32 deadlock.

"My goal was to at least tie the game at the half," said Sowinski, sophomore, Hopkinton, R.I.

The Mount hit two free throws out of the gate to start the second half, but Sacred Heart went another run capped by a Kerri Burke three-pointer, giving them an eight point lead.

The Pioneers' lead hit double digits, 49-39, by the 10-minute mark and grew to 15, 58-43, on a Pape three-point play with just under six and half minutes left.

The Mountaineers put together a run of their own but could cut the lead only to eight.

"They fought us tooth and nail all the way to the end," said Swanson. "A win is a win, and we'll take it."

Sacred Heart came into the game with the top rated three-point defense in the conference but allowed 50 percent shooting from beyond the arc in the first half. But the Pioneers held the Mount to just 5.4 percent shooting (6-39) in the second half.

"They attacked us and we lost our objective of what we were trying to do," said Walker. "We were able to regain our composure and get back on track."

The Pioneers are now 13-3 against Mount St. Mary's all-time and have won 11 straight meetings.
