Seen any extra newspaper stacks around campus? That's because Sacred Heart University has decided to offer The New York Times free of charge to students and staff.

"Having The New York Times on campus is a good idea. It's a nice way to keep us [the students] updated," said Aaron Poach, junior, Wallingford. "Since I never watch the news while I'm at school, I feel almost disconnected from the world and having The New York Times on campus helps keep me more connected."

The New York Times Newspaper in Education Program serves high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, and colleges in over 200 cities in the United States.

The schools participating in this program have gotten nothing but positive feedback from the schools about using The New York Times newspapers in their classrooms.

The availability of the newspaper helps improve reading comprehension. Students also feel more confident because they know more about current events and what is going on in the world.

"I think it's great that the New York Times is being provided on campus now and it's so easy to pick up. I've been picking it up almost everyday to read it," said Rob Edwards, senior, West Sayville, N.Y.

Sacred Heart University receives The New York Times daily, seven days a week. They first started their subscription with the newspaper in April of 2002 but recently students have shown an interest in them.

"I like how The New York Times is on campus now, it's a quality newspaper with real life information that students need," said Pete Izzo, junior, Cutchogue, N.Y. "It is especially nice for students who don't get the opportunity to go off campus very often."

According to a New York Times representative, Sacred Heart University has set up a special account with them that allows the school to put the newspapers out in more convenient areas such as in front of the market on campus.

"It is nice to have around and very useful, especially with the growing business interest at Sacred Heart," said Mark Weber, junior, Cedar Grove, N.J. "Even non-business majors, like myself, enjoy [The New York Times] for it's a more educated way of approaching topics whether it is about the government or an industry."
