This week, New Jersey made it official that they were now going to accept civil unions. Now, along with states like Vermont and Connecticut, New Jersey is allowing gay couples to be awarded with the same benefits of heterosexual married couples.

To be quite honest, it only makes sense that New Jersey would follow in Connecticut and Vermont's footsteps. And being a resident of New Jersey, I think it's only fair that we do. I don't know if you remember, but back in 2005, our former governor, Jim McGreevey, resigned from his position and revealed his newfound homosexuality.

For weeks after that, emails circulated everywhere featuring our former governor in a hot pink mesh tank top and hot pants. Oh what photo shop can do. Once again, New Jersey was the punch line of every late night talk show's jokes.

Instead of taking three steps backwards, I think New Jersey is finally taking a step forward. By allowing gay couples to be recognized as basically married couples, and to grant them the same legal benefits, is something that should have happened a long time ago.

Do I think that other states should follow suit? Absolutely. Although, I know there are many states in our country that aren't as liberal as N.J., V.T. and C.T., this is something that should be allowed everywhere. We would only be regressing as a country if it isn't.

So get out the champagne, the electric slide, and ugly bridesmaids dresses, because there will be many more weddings to attend. Looks like everyone, gay couples included, now can have their wedding cake and eat it too.

While I applaud their intentions to give equal rights to homosexuals, New Jersey did NOT legalize "gay marriage". What they did was create yet another "separate-but-not-quite-equal" institution. (Continued…)
