The Sacred Heart women's ice hockey team journeyed to the state of New York this past weekend to play the Elmira College Soaring Eagles and the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons.

This past Friday, February 9, 2007, the Sacred Heart women's ice hockey team traveled to Elmira College to face the Soaring Eagles. Junior defenseman Devon Gaslin helped the Pioneers get off to a fast start by scoring the first goal of the game with 4 minutes 45 seconds left on the clock in the first period.

The Eagles, which currently have seven wins, one loss, and two tied games, responded to the early goal of Gaslin by scoring another, with 1:38 left in the first period. As the second period ticked away, it resulted with the score still tied at 1-1.

In the third period of the game the Eagles scored four goals that would ultimately be the deciding points of the game. The Pioneers were unable to make a rebuttal from the four goals and were out shot by the Eagles.

The Eagles put up 42 goal attempts for the game, with the Pioneers not even matching them by half. The Pioneers made 19 attempts for the game.

Saturday, Feb. 10, the Pioneers faced off against the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons in Cortland, New York. Unlike Friday's quick start by the Pioneers, it was Cortland that started the game off with a goal 1:38 into the first period.

Neither team answered the goal for the remainder of the first period, but senior Michelle Panella tied the game at 5:40 into the second period. Unfortunately, the Red Dragons returned the favor times two, putting up two more goals in the second period to take the lead.

Freshman Sandy Parlato scored in the third period to shrink the 3-1 gap within one point, to 3-2. Cortland quickly responded no more than two minutes later with a goal, and then again with less than five minutes on the clock.

With a three point lead over the Pioneers it looked as though the Red Dragons were ending the game at 5-2, but freshman Brittany Rosselle sneaked in her first career goal, and the last goal of the game, to close the gap to 5-3.

The next game is scheduled for Sunday Feb. 17 versus the Rhode Island Rams at 2:00 p.m.
