Friday night's game for the Sacred Heart University men's ice hockey team was a win that really helped the team out. With a score of 5-2, Sacred Heart Pioneers are now in second place in the Atlantic Hockey standings. The game took place on Feb. 9 and was against Mercyhurst at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Pennsylvania.

With the assistance of an injured Pierre-Luc O'Brien, senior, Nicolet, Quebec and Dave Grimson, sophomore, Mozart, Saskatchewan, the first goal of the first period was scored by Drew Sanders, senior, Modesto, Calif. This shorthanded goal started off the game at 6:45 into the first period and it was Sanders second goal of the season.

Soon after Sanders made the score 1:0, Mercyhurst came back and tied up the game at 14:10 into the first period. The puck flew right past our goalie and into the net.

"Our captain and leader Pierre Luc O'Brien battled through injury, when players on the team see that, the way he handles himself, it really drives us to play our best. There's no excuses when you see your best player battle through injury," said Eric Giosa, sophomore, Northville, Mich.

Even with a hurt player, Sacred Heart was fast to react in the second period and was able to get a two goal lead on their opponent. The first of the two goals in the second period came 5:15 into the game from Paul Ferraro, sophomore, Pleasantville, N.Y. This defenseman was assisted by O'Brien and Alexandre Parent, junior, Boisbriand, Quebec and made his first of two power plays during this game.

The second goal of the second period was a waste of no time. Within seconds after the second goal for Sacred Heart was made by Giosa. Giosa was assisted by Dave Jarman, freshman, Toronto, Ontario and Kalen Wright, senior, Candle Lake, Saskatchewan and with the combined effort they brought the score to 3-1.

The end of the second period showed that Mercyhurst wasn't giving up. The score became 3-2 after they scored a power play shot that flew over the shoulder of Pioneer goalie Jason Smith, senior, St. Lambert, Quebec.

"Our penalty kill was great, our power play was productive, and when you have those two working together it's a deadly combination," said Giosa.

With high drive to win, Paul Ferraro's second power play goal of the game came at 9:17 into the third period which gave Sacred Heart a two goal lead once more. With the help of Giosa's quick pass from across the ice and assistance from Bear Trapp, sophomore, Regina, Saskatchewan, the score became 4-2.

Trapp and Giosa paired up again in order to assist Scott Marchesi, junior, South Portland, Maine for the last goal at 19:26 into the game, leaving the ice with a score of 5-2. This last goal was an empty netter and a perfect way to end a well played game.

The next home game for these hustling Pioneers is on Feb. 17 against Holy Cross at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 7:00 p.m.
