Too late for spring break

Issue date: 2/15/07 Section: Perspectives
Only fifteen days left until spring break, is it too late to plan your trip?

The first thought that comes to mind is of course its too late to start planning a vacation when your departure date is a mere 2 weeks away, but that doesn't mean it can't be done.

The average college student's dream vacation consists of about one out of four destinations. Florida, Mexico, a caribbean island, or a cruise. However, if your going somewhere that is also for tourists, not just college students, it truly may be too late.

"I am not going anywhere but I would have like to go to Jamaica. I do think it's a little late for students to plan a spring break trip unless it's to somewhere in the states, then you still have some time. If I were going away to an island or something I would have planed it back in November or December, to get the best rates," said Kathryn Bohren, junior, Hopewell Jct, N.Y.

According to expedia.com most hotels for the week of March 3 to March 10, have been booked for weeks.

However, according to the website STA travel, a website dedicated to only college students, "spring breakers" still have all the same deals they had back in October.

"I don't think its too late for students to plan a spring break trip, but I don't think they are going to get any good deals or save any money. My friends and I are going to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and planned our spring break in November. We are staying at our friend's house, but we got a really good deal on the plane ticket. Planning it early was such a good decision because now we have nothing to worry about and a lot of time to save up for spending money," said Caitlin Ferrara, junior, Bronx, N.Y.

A huge problem with waiting until the last minute is where is all this money going to come from to go on this trip? Just because those college spring break websites still have deals available doesn't mean your not still going to be paying $1,600 to have a good time. When you plan late it gives you no time to manage and save your money for this vacation.
