Though the Bridgeport Sound Tigers' mascot "Storm" did not show up, two hockey team players scoreed with students.

Greg Johnson and Domas Malec's presence on campus kicked off the Bridgeport Sound Tigers' partnership with Sacred Heart's Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center, which recently signed on as the official therapy provider for the hockey team.

"This affiliation with the Sound Tigers has helped the physical therapy practice be recognized as part of the athletic program," said Mike Emery, Chairman of the Department of Physical Therapy. "Aiding the Sound Tigers has also provided credibility to the SHU program and clinic."

The AHL affiliate and farm team of the New York Islanders, is known for their all-star goalie Wade Dubielewicz.

According to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Web site, Dubielewicz played an integral part in the Tigers' winning streak when he returned to the ice after a recent injury. As a result, their wining percentage was brought up to .500.

Integrated Rehabilitation Services has worked closely with the Sound Tigers hockey team in previous years making the decision for SHU to be their official therapy provider a simple one.

"There has been a very long-standing relationship with Rich Steiglitz, who in turn has a very close relationship with SHU," said Marketing Representative of the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Luke Milbury.

Sacred Heart University was the team's physical therapist for the 2005-2006 season and was then awarded the contract for this season, said Rich Steiglitz, managing director and CEO of Integrated Rehabilitation Services.

Attending games and supporting the team, the school's physical trainers have been working hard to provide the best care for the members of the Sound Tigers team.

"If the players need care above and beyond what the athletic trainers can provide, they visit the on-campus physical therapists," said Steiglitz.

While on campus, the Sound Tigers also promoted their upcoming games in addition to showing their support for the school's athletic trainers.

"I remember when I was in college, the athletic trainers always helped out a lot," said Sound Tigers team member, Greg Johnson, Center, Windsor. "Students working with the trainers learn a lot from watching them and gain guidance and help from the trainers as well."

Johnson isn't the only member of the Sound Tigers that feels confident with SHU students working so closely with the team.

"I feel confident to have students, athletic trainers and physical therapists from SHU help me when I'm injured," said Domas Malec, Defense, Slavakia.

One of the team's upcoming games will be Feb. 21, which will be the official Sacred Heart University Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Night for all of the students to attend and cheer on the newest addition to the SHU family. The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. against the Philadelphia Phantoms.

The University bus services of Bridgeport Transportation will be providing transportation to and from the game.
