Robin Roberts, news anchor for ABC News' Good Morning America, came to speak at the Edgerton Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday.

Roberts, has worked in broadcasting for over 20 years and on Good Morning America since 1995. She has covered a wide array of special events for the morning program. While on the program she has interviewed everyone from former President Clinton to Tiger Woods. "The most interesting interviews were all a matter of timing," said Roberts.

Roberts had a theme that "position is power" throughout her lecture. She discussed how she got her start at a local country music radio station in Louisiana as a disc jockey. "I was putting myself in a good position for things," said Roberts.

"I found her very motivational and I completely agree with her about putting yourself in good positions and [her mentality that if you] keep pushing yourself, you will meet success in multiple ways," said Kara Basque, freshmen, Plainville M.A.

"What Robin does so well is create a sense of community and family and I think that is what our students are about," said Professor Anne Barker Ed. D, RN, Associate Professor of Nursing, New Haven.

"She [Roberts] has a great sense of humor and a wonderful sense of warmth; she just makes people feel comfortable."

Roberts had an undercurrent of hilarity and colloquialism which helped listeners relate and understand her story.

"My becoming a sports caster was a tribute to my parents. I always get asked the question is it more difficult being black or being a woman? Well, I've always been a black woman so I don't have any other perspective, but I'll take black for 500. My parents never allowed us to play the race card or the gender card they wanted us to have the same opportunities as everyone else," said Roberts.

"We came to listen and gain some perspective, maybe hear a different point of view of things," said Brianna Bubeck, senior, Bethlehem N.Y.

Roberts began with sports journalism working for ESPN's NFL Prime Time. Here she learned how to position herself for success.

"Proximity is power, you could pray, hope and dream but if you don't actually position yourself for success you are making things more difficult," said Roberts.
