It was the 6th game that the Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team had against Robert Morris University on February 3, 2007 at 2 p.m. The Pioneers lost with a score of 1-0 at the Wonderland of Ice.
After losing to Robert Morris the night before, Saturday's game became even more important to the Sacred Heart in order to make a come back. Robert Morris had won the last three games in a row and this game became their fourth.
"Tonight was another game that we should have won," said Devon Gaslin, junior, Augusta, Maine. There were many opportunities to score but Sacred Heart just couldn't seem to get anything into the net that afternoon.
Robert Morris freshman, Jessica Riley, scored the only goal of the game 11:43 into the first period. Riley was assisted by Maria Olausson, junior, and Alissa Dorman.
"After a tough battle the day before and coming back when we were down, we thought for sure a one goal lead wasn't going to stop us. Even though Boulay stood on her head, and we had some pretty decent scoring opportunities, we just couldn't put the puck in the net," said Allie Gillman, sophomore, Montreal, Quebec City.
The goalies on both of the teams put up a strong fight. RMU goalie Brianne McLaughlin. is currently the female student athlete of the month within her school. It was her third shutout of the season and she blocked 20 shots.
However SHU goalie Stephanie Boulay was equally as good. She stopped 41 shots. Boulay's quick saves prevented Robert Morris from getting a 2-0 lead.
"Stephanie Boulay stood on her head today for her last home division I game. I wish we could have capitalized more with the power plays and the scoring opportunities we did have. However, I don't think that Robert Morris will take us so lightly in the future because we gave them two good games," said Whitney Dziama, sophomore, Walpole, Mass. Between facing hard shots and catching some breaks, Boulay continued her strong guarding of the net that Pioneer fans have seen all season.
There were very close calls for both teams in the second and third periods of the game. A furious effort was made by Sacred Heart players and this was evident by the multiple stomach dives made on the ice. The game was fought hard and played with much exertion.
"We fought hard in two very good games against a good division one opponent. It was a solid weekend for us as a team even though we didn't come out with the win," said Boulay.
The attempt was huge but the scoring was minimal. The next game for the Pioneers is an away game on February 9 against Elmira. This game will be the first of a two game New York road trip that precedes a game against Cortland State the day after.
