After a tough defeat at the hands of Long Island University on Monday, there was something for senior guard Amanda Pape to smile about. After all, she joined an exclusive list that includes former University of Connecticut basketball stars Rebecca Lobo, Diana Taurasi, and Nykesha Sales.
Just the day before, Pape was named the 2006 Connecticut female athlete of the year by the Connecticut Sports Writers' Alliance.
There is no question that the Stamford native deserves the award. Just last month, she became Sacred Heart's all-time leading scorer. She also led the Pioneers to their first NEC title and NCAA tournament appearance last March while earning NEC player of the year with her conference leading 17.9 points.
"This award is very exciting for me" said Pape, "it's an honor to receive it."
Pape was quick to include her teammates, both current and past, that helped her win this award. One player that stood out for her was former Sacred Heart all-star Nicolle Rubino.
"My team definitely helped me win this award both from this year and last. Nicolle definitely helped me last year and has influenced me as a player this year."
Pioneer coach Ed Swanson also commented on Pape's award.
"Amanda's award is terrific. It is definitely tremendous honor for her to be mentioned with some of the all-time greats for women's basketball. We are definitely looking forward to celebrating the award in April."
This award not only means a lot for Pape but also for the school and team.
" I think this award will help the team a bit, but not nearly as much as the success the team has had over the past couple of years."
Pape has not only experienced this success on the college level. In her high school years at Trinity Catholic, Pape led her team to two state championship titles while finishing her career with 2,429. Her points mark still stands as the highest total for either men or women in the city of Stamford history.
